Apple laptop hard drive failure not under warranty - any chance of recovery?

My also pen-friend's MacBook crashed today and his Apple Care expired a few months ago. Are there any companies you could use to endeavour to recover the (valuable) files still on his hard goad? How expensive would this be? I don't think anything was backed up. Thanks!

I am wondering hardly how valuable a file could be if it wasn't even backed up? It sounds as if these files are high-ranking enough to attempt recovery somehow. I believe if I were your friend, I'd take the computer to a repair store and see if they can work some magic to get the material off of the old hard shepherd and onto a new hard drive to be installed in the computer.
