Basically Hyper-threading means that though the Dual -Core i7 is physically a 2-core processor, effectively it can act as a 4-core processor (assuming the software can take head start of the essential cores by multithreading).

I am frustrating to build a computer for gaming (but don't have a ton of cash) and need it to be niggardly. how big of a difference would it make to be on Core2Duo vs Intel Core i5 vs Intel Core i7?
i5 and i7 set someone back a lot and in most cases they are worth it.
