The Intel i5-670 is 3.46GHz. The Intel i7-950 is 3.06GHz. Is the i7 bettor because it is a quad-core vs dual-core and also an 8MB hiding-place vs the 4MB cache of the i5? I need something for gaming and Adobe Gaffer Collection CS4.
The i7 (900 series) also have three mutatis mutandis memory channels, while the i5 processors only have two memory channels. This actually makes a big difference when running apps on multiple cores that like to thrash the DRAM.
