I'm in requirement of a new laptop and it has to have the horsepower to last for at least 5-6 years. My Dell Inspiron 9300 is universal on 5.5 years and the screen is just opening to get those annoying lines on it.I only had to replace the HDD at 3 yrs and a couple of replacement batteries. Expected upkeep...
Unless convinced otherwise, it will probably be a Dell again.
If you aren't flourishing to game on it than the i7 is way more than you need. Even the i3 will be good for most tasks you listed, but if you insufficiency a bit more and have the $ then go for the i5.
22.07.11 I've been using Macs for more years that I need to admit--I mean long before Windows XP and Mac OS X saw the scold of day. And since Windows 7, I've honestly been more tempted by Windows notebooks . I like better ultra-portables but don't' want to sacrifice lots of behaviour, and Apple 's outgoing MacBook Air was less than brilliant for more difficult tasks. So I made do with my Acer TimelineX 1830T with a ULV Sum i7 CPU (pre-Sandy Bridge) and the 13. 3", slim Lenovo ThinkPad X1 with full Nucleus i5 Sandy Bridge inside.
