I have a MSI K9A2 CF mobo with a 790X chipset and supports both AM2/AM2+ sockets. Is an AMD Phenom II X4 CPU compatible with this motherboard?
Yes. All Phenom II's are either AM3 or AM2+. that motherboard supports AM2+, however, since AM3 is withershins compatible, it will support AM3 as well. you may have to update your bios, though.
AMD's Spider principles hasn't taken off as AMD had hoped. But this hasn't block up manfacturers like MSI producing their latest K9A2 Platinum motherboard. It uses AMD's lastest 790FX chipset, supports Phenom processors and features 4 x PCIe slots for 4-way Crossfire X configuration.
MSI's full mark-up of AM2+ motherboards based on the 780G/V chipsets includes the K9A2GM/VM-FIH, K9A2GM/VM-FD, K9A2GM/VM-F V2 and K9A2GM-FIH-S. Featuring either Radeon HD 3200 (780G) or 3100 (780V) integrated graphics, the new motherboards enter a occur with support for AM2 and AM2+ processors and DDR2-1066 memory.

Minute review of MSI K9A2 Platinum - excellent AMD motherboard, with lot's of features and whopping overclock potential. MSI K9A2 Platinum is anything else but lacking features. The motherboard is based on the somewhat new AMD North bridge - 790FX and SB600 South bond.
Jumping the gun on AM2+ chipsets seems to be MSI's specialty so after unwillingly unveiling Nvidia's upcoming 7 series chipsets, the friends has announced the first RD790-powered motherboard, the K9A2 Platinum.
