I bought a refurbished HP Compaq 6910p notebook a unite of months ago. Two weeks ago, it failed - a few minutes after being switched on, well-lit use (TortoiseSVN and Notepad++ in Windows XP), and suddenly the screen corrupted for a few seconds then it closed up down. After then, switching it on would show some signs of life, but the screen stayed raven. I initially thought video card failure, but when I returned it to the merchandise trader I bought it from (someone I know) he eventually figured out that a RAM enmired had failed. We both figured that was odd, but he replaced that stick and the notebook worked again. Until this morning, that is, when the scrupulous same failure recurred.
